I think Twin Peaks and FWWM is very similar. Thankfully Brick is not as confusing - there is an obvious plot - but I think it has the same type of oddities that challenge the viewer to dig deeper rather than just sit back and watch the movie from beginning to end with no analysis. Again, David Lynch is extremely confusing but I think the style is the same. Emily was wrapped up in plastic down by flowing water - so was Laura Palmer. I think some of the characters are manifestations of Brian's thoughts (my proposed theory recently posted) - so were several characters in FWWM. Similar eerie conversations take place on the phone. Emily seems to be "in a different world now" just like Laura Palmer at the Black Lodge. Michael J. Anderson is a transitional character between the Black Lodge and the real world - the Pin seems to serve in the same capacity (walking around San Clemente in a cape?).

It's not really such a new film, but River's Edge from 1986 sort of has a similar feel to Brick. It's a story about teenagers f***ing up very badly, and it stars Keanu Reeves and Crispin Glover. If you love Brick I think you should check it out!

I forgot about River's Edge. Was a pretty good film if I remember.
