Just watched Brick with my film class and in discussing the movie the role of the birds was brought up. As a class there was many a theory to what they represent and their purpose in the film. Wondering who else noticed the repeated use of birds and ideas on what they represent.

A few theories the class came up with:
Homage to Hitchcock and his movie Psyco
They represent moments of freedom or where something is let go
They represent like the characters the ability to see what is going but not be truly in control

I don't remember birds having a lot to do with Psycho. Are you, perhaps, thinking about The Birds?

In psycho Norman Bates's room is full of birds of prey, Lila Crane's last name is a bird and she has scenes with passive birds such as Canaries, and Norman even tells Lila that she eats like a bird. In Psycho unlike in Brick though the birds are stuffed birds.

So, in other words, in Psycho birds represent victimhood?

i would not say victim-hood exactly but more symbolic of the people they are associated with. Norman as a strong predator and Lila as passive or weak. I am not trying to say the birds in Brick hold the same meaning as the birds in Psycho either, it was just an idea presented in the class that Johnson may be trying to pay homage to Hitchcock with the birds.

It probably wouldn't be a good idea for me to answer this, but I will say that the only birds that were written into the script were in the tunnel scenes.

Birds in tunnels... This is a head-scratcher and a thread that I'm glad you revived so I could see it.

In the initial draft of the script that was passed around between friends in the early 90s, the birds were named "Coffee" and "Pie".

[THIS IS A LIE]

Spammer spotting: if they have a URL to someplace odd in the signature and one post in their history, a) don't click it, and b) the post probably won't be here long enough for you to click it.
