Does anyone have any guesses as to why they need two guns?

They have an old-fashioned 'Gat' and the modern 'Blunderbuss'.

It certainly gives the film an old western style to it.

The weapon of a Looper. Not as clumsy or as random as a Blunderbuss. An elegant weapon

Assuming the technology involved would inhibit certain guns from travelling through certain rifts.

The metal of the gun itself. Or perhaps the caliber.

This is fun.

I want a new identity as well

There are more than two types of weapons. Check out http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Looper

It seems more like 2044 is the old wild west compared to the future, maybe.

I don't think most people are aware of the history of the blunderbuss.
