Several years ago I read a science fiction novel trilogy that started with Altered Carbon and cycled through Woken Furies and Broken Angels. To date, they are my favorite sci-fi stories of all time. I heard they optioned the series to Joel Silver for film rights. Nothing ever came of it and it's still in limbo. That said, if done correctly, they could be the grittiest, most epic movies of our time. However, all the names I saw attached to the movie's director seat were less than desirable. Bad even. I've always kept them stories in mind and always thought about who would be a perfect match to direct them. Chris Nolan came to mind but the stories may be a little too gritty for his style. Niel Blomkamp seemed suited but he appears to be tied up for a decade with his projects. This year, I saw Looper and I must say it is my favorite movie of the year. It caught me by surprise. Brilliantly done, gritty and exciting from start to finish. More enjoyable than The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and Skyfall (all of which were excellent movies). It's obvious you have a rare talent for writing good stories that translate into good movies.

My point to all of this is I think that you, Mr. Johnson, are perfect for this material. Looper proved to me that you are not afraid to make a movie with balls that doesn't hold back for the sake of making a pg-13 movie just to get a few extra ticket sales form teens and tweeners. If you've not read the novels, you should read Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan. It's sheer genius. Though I'm quite sure you're a busy man and reading a novel may not be something your schedule allows often, It's worth it. I'm not going to pretend to know a damn thing about how movies get made and all the red tape that comes along with property rights and all that but you would be my number one choice to direct them. Just saying. And even if that isn't in the realm of possibility, I still suggest you make time to read the books for your personal delight. You seem to know good sci-fi so I'm certain you will love the stories.

Altered Carbon is cyberpunk to the max.

Indeed it is. Very good cyberpunk. Never read anything like it.

I listened to the audiobook of AC last year. I thought it was fantastic.
I watched this short film over at i09 last week and AC immediately popped in my head:
