Some good points were raised.

I guess I'll have to defer to Slavoj Zizek here and say that Mr. Johnson's decision to portray animal cruelty, not the cruelty itself, is at issue. Shouldn't directors take some responsibility, continuity aside?

Tarantino, who is a quarter black, is an interesting case though.

"at issue" to whom? you?
"directors take responsibility" to whom? you?
you who are apparently still confused over whether there was any animal cruelty involved in the film actual or intended? please.

you want to see some animal cruelty?
try "28 Days Later" or "Dogtooth".
find a test case where your objections can be rooted in objective proof & stop playing the gadfly.

Leach, you have a case there. Subjective proof is not going to stand in court. But consider the case of Todd Chugg, a director whose only full length feature film has unfairly disappeared in the black hole of our contemporary consumer culture (you can't even find it on Rotten Tomatoes!) Chugg, a Libyan dissident, was the first and only Libyan director to criticize the then-budding Gaddafi's terrorist regime in 1979 by showing a likeness of Gaddafi (since executed!) having carnal relations with an elephant shrew. What was this proof of? Who was suffering more, the elephant shrew or the Libyans? The more salient point is that Chugg was not even a Libyan. He was from Nome, New Jersey.

And not to toot my own horn, but you brought up Dogtooth. I talked to Lanthimos while he was in post-production. He told me about the scene you're complaining about (I couldn't agree more, by the way) and I told him I wouldn't watch it if he included it in his final cut. The coda: George called me up the day after the Thessaloniki Film Festival premiere a drunken mess, almost crying. He regretted the whole thing.

I thought this was spam when I saw the title! Then before I read the post I assumed it was to do with make up testing. Hurr hurr.

... THEN I learned that there was a version/versions with an orangutan in! Damn, I'm missing out!

I can't really comment until I've seen versions with Gobo in them, but it does seem to me that this is being blown a little out of proportion. As other people have stated, there are other films that show animal cruelty to a higher degree - not that that makes it right, as there is a chance it may give people ideas even if it isn't condoning such acts, but it does perhaps suggest that you're bringing your argument to the cleaner instead of the CEO, if that makes sense.

Seriously. It wasn't until this got about 6 replies I realized that the Obama Platinum Coin Ultraviolet Ultraviolent Palm d'Or Special Release Looper Edition, Now With Flavor Crystals was a real thing.

sorry to hear that he's a mess, but i will think less harshly of him now.
i have 9 cats, so you can imagine how distressing the scene was for me.
best wishes.

I love this thread.
Hopefully when Rian does a Special Edition re-release in the US he'll add Gobo back in with CGI. Also Cid's imaginary talking robot which was in the San Diego Sneak Preview and the early leaked Workprint cut but was scraped before special effects were completed, which is a shame because Eddie Murphey's voice over work in that part was great.
Also we all know Rian originally intended for Old Joe to shoot first at the end but the budget constraints prevented him from seeing that vision through, so hopefully they'll change that too.
But I'm getting off topic now so I'll shut up.

I think the only animal cruelty in this thread is the shark, which has been jumped repetitively.

Animal Cruelty is NOT a game.

c'mon man, i was playing off your "who are you?" line & naming movies in which it appears conspicuously.
seemed to be better than whatever else was happening in this misbegotten thread.
if that constitutes getting off topic, please pardon me for
not being able to take this thread seriously.
