Loved it.

The impression I got was that Sid had enough similarities to Young Joe's early life that perhaps he and Joe were one and the same...but I realized this couldn't be the case in the Young Joe/Old Joe timeline, since the Joes don't have TK and the Rainmaker has an impact in China in Old Joe's timeline--though nobody has ever seen him. But I can imagine an explanation that could make this so, using time travel.

So was this intended?

I love this theory waaaaaaay too much to spoil it with "intent." Rock on. (And thanks - glad you liked it!)

Right, having you close the loop on that theory would be a bummer. Funny the Rorschach film becomes for people--guess I was wondering if anyone else interpreted it the same way I did.

Intended or not, it made for a very powerful ending. Definitely going to have to watch it again.

(Brick was great too--Netflixed it immediately after coming back from Looper. Plus you like mountain goats. Cool man. Friends grew up with him.)

I was convinced of this also on my first watch. But after thinking about it for a few minutes, I realized that means Joe would have fooled around with his mother. Pretend that scene isn't there and its a really fun "loop" theory.

Great film!

it still may or may not have been his mother. :p
i thought that as well when i saw it. then saw it again and thought it more.
but i really really hope that it's not it. :D
would be too traumatic for the kid to get all mind wiped to lose his tk. :(

Wouldn't Joe have remembered her though? Like, "Oh snap, that's my old farm house, that's exactly what I looked like at that age, and that hot lady right there looks exactly like how I remember my Mom. I'd better not do her, just in case!"

Also, Joe talks openly about his childhood and his mother at one point, right?

Yep, Joe says his mom was a vagrant and sold him for drug money. You could see that as a possible "How it could have gone" if Sara hadn't brought Cid to her sister, though. That's an interesting question, actually. Which would be better: Sara selling Cid for drugs, which would probably kill her and would turn him into a career criminal and drug addict, or getting her sister killed but saving both of them?

I don't actually think this theory holds water in the end, but I like the questions it raises :)

I think the scene where YJ stops his car in front of the small red headed child is a flashback to his own childhood as if he see's himself in the child. He does none of this in the presence of Cid.

He's not driving a car while on drugs in the presence of Cid, either.

I think you misunderstood. I was referring to the simililarites between YJ and Cid. I believe the scene in which he sees the young boy, whilst high, it reminds him of his own past. He actually stops and you can see him thinking, almost reminiscing.

He doesn't do this when he is with Cid, showing that he has no faded or misplaced memories of Cid's childhood. Ergo, they couldn't possibly be one of the same.
