^ I returned it without opening; there might have been a DVD in there but it was labeled "Ultraviolet." Never heard of that before! Apparently it had 5 deleted scenes and a commentary. But I wanted ALL OF THE SCENES.

I thought the blu ray was going to be in the mail today so I could show the movie to my friend tomorrow for our movie night, but it's still not here, grr, arg! Now we'll have to put it off till next time and watch something lame instead.

They sell a version that's JUST ultraviolet? I thought it was just an add-on to the blu. Bah!

I've never heard of this, pretty sure it was a DVD along with Ultraviolet - you may be able to buy just Ultraviolet, but it would be online a la iTunes and not as a physical object in a store, since those combo deals are just a DVD plus a slip of paper with an Ultraviolet "download code".

Fun fact: my place of employment is so out of date that our computers do not have internet access. I've got to rely on my brain for most things, unless a customer is really nice, in which case I'll use my limited data access on mah' phone. However, there are times when even that doesn't help, such as when a customer demands to know the title of "that movie with Robert somebody helping a retarded kid that got raped or something to solve a mystery" .

The answer was Primal Fear...

The blu-ray I bought was labeled "BLU-RAY AND ULTRAVIOLET," and just today I saw DVDs in the grocery store (Rian! You made a grocery store movie!) that were labeled "Ultraviolet." So it comes with both. If the disc Jules' mom bought was in a standard DVD case, it was a DVD with Ultraviolet download.

So my Looper blu ray will be in tomorrow (cursed Sundays! Cursed slow delivery! WTF!) and my best pal really wants to see it tonight. So I'm getting it on PPV tonight anyway. What's an extra five bucks for a movie night with your best friend? :D

When Bloom came out as a rental exclusive first, I rented it to have a viewing party with friends who didn't get to see it in the theaters. Then I slacked off on returning it, which resulted in me "buying" it (as Blockbuster is/was wont to do). So I have two copies: one to lend out, one to keep at home. It's been handy, as I lend it out quite frequently.

What I'm saying is: well-worth the extra fiver.

Re: ultraviolet. Well I guess that's kind of neat, for people who want to make gifs or music videos or something. Although, usually folks have other means of downloading for those purposes. ;)

Actually one of the reasons ultraviolet sucks is it prevents you from doing just that. To discourage people from just ripping the DVD, which would allow them to do anything with the file, including copying it, re-editing it or making .gifs.
They including an ultraviolet copy which is inferior to ripping the DVD in every way, because it includes DRM which stops you from doing anything other than simply playing the file.
I understand why they do it and it's a step in the right direction but at the moment it's nowhere near enough. Also they tend to lock you into using Windows or Mac and as I'm a Linux fanboy (for everything except video editing) that's not much help.
Anyway rant over.

On the topic of "fake" films, there have been several occonally where my parents have done just that, rented a "fake" copy of a DVD, usually from the lovely people at Asylum films.
Tesco DVD rental have really tiny thumbnails for movies (with no way of enlarging them) and as my dad isn't familiar with the cast in the "proper" Sherlock Homes film, he can easily add the wrong one.
I've taken to logging into their account from University and correcting their list without their knowledge, like a guardian angel of bad film choices.
There's nothing I can do when they add Battleship to the list though, I think they'd notice if I changed it to Battleship Potemkin

And DRM doesn't seem to do anything to stop it. Fuck, people gif things that are airing on TV as they are airing. I am convinced people see a giffable moment and pause what they're watching to gif it and post it to Tumblr immediately. Which is its own problem.

Ah, the stories I could tell you from my video store days. People renting foreign films with the same/similar title to a film still in theaters that coincidentally got a DVD release just at that moment...or porn versions. I'll never forget the time a guy tried to get a refund on this little gem, claiming he'd meant to rent The Mask of Zorro for his kids. Sure you did, buddy.
