Before Sara leaves in the truck with Cid, Joe tells her:

Quote:
Joe takes the Frog Buzzer from his pocket, presses it.
Sara’s buzzes in her pocket.
JOE
One buzz means come and get me.
Two or nothing, don’t.

Then at the end:

Quote:
EXT. FIELD - WITH CID & SARA
She carries him. Walking fast back towards a far distant
figure lying still on the edge of the field. Joe.
Then a faint buzz. The flasher, in her pocket. She pulls it
out. Two flashes.
She slows. Stops. Looking at him, far away. Two flashes.

This part has always made me feel really stupid because I don't quite understand it. *shame* How was he clicking it?

That's why I cut it. My initial idea was he was dying but not dead (hence the original "do I get the scar when I'm cut or when it's inevitable that I'm going to be cut" line in the diner) but I realized in production that it was confusing and unnecessary.

That gives me sad feels. But thanks for clearing that up. :) Admittedly, when I first read it, there was definitely a part of me that was ten years old and thinking, "But he could still be okay and Old Joe will still be gone? Like a magical Disney death?"

ETA: But I like the Schrodinger's Cat / uncertainty principle element of it, too. If it's a foregone conclusion that a thing is or isn't, then does it affect the future whether or not it's already happened in the present? And is anything a foregone conclusion, ever? If not, then the future isn't even a thing, it's just an infinite series of possibilities which would look like a haze in the mind of someone actually from the future.

Back when the script first leaked (sorry! ) I had an anonymous conversation with a few other anonymous people on an anonymous web site about the nature of past, present, future, and loops (and loops within loops) in the universe of the script. It was just a bunch of Timeheads fanpoodling and flailing. Once in a while I debate actually posting the conversation somewhere now. :)

I absolutely adore that part, but I can see why it was cut from the film. I'm happy though - I really enjoy having the script as a separate thing, thinking of printing it off and making a little book out of it.
