this has probably already been discussed thoroughly,
but it just occurred to me after watching the "Red Riding"
film trilogy and while anticipating the season 5 finale of
"Breaking Bad" that "Looper" is up to its eyeballs in noir.

like i said, probably a big DUH! to all concerned,
but i will have my eyes peeled the next time
i watch it.

actually this is probably as good a time as any to bring this up. But you seem to be the only commercially successful director who has managed to re-contextualize language. I don't know why it's not done more often. Maybe it's difficult to get the performance.

I was playing L.A. Noire and realized how much fun it is just talk like that.

it's off topic, but i've always loved vernacular, whether it's engineering tech-speak or hiphop slang.
one of the attractions of the created worlds of sci-fi has traditionally been the vernacular of the place[s]
and time[s]. "Looper" is such a delight because it is constantly intertwining snippets of SF-speak with
noir slang and Mr. Johnson's created world lingo. one of the reasons i'm enthralled with "Primer" is
the way in which Shane Carruth refused to dumb-down the engineering verbiage.
