Kara was that mirror shot. Brendan was the jacket. Laura, the song at the piano. Emily was the bracelets in the water. Dode was his little lair behind the pie house. The Brain was his spot deep in the stacks in the library. Tugger was his scar (which didn't end up really working as I'd intended.) The Pin was his club foot.

The scene/moment that embodied Tugger for me was when he was watching The Pin and Brendan on the beach and a speeding train passed behind him. When that train passed behind him...it seemed to emphaise the anger within.

Yet, all those images you described, how important are they when driving their voice and keeping the momentum going throughout the script?

Very important - things can easily get so jumbled and convoluted, it's important for me to have a very simple essense of each character to cling to.

I like how you phrased that. Keep the essense simple for each character. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Let me ask you something off topic....
how do you feel about Hemingway as a persona?

holy crap thats good

Rian: Why did you choose The Jacket for Brendan? It's funny that a lot of people a ssociate it with him because he wears the same thing the entire time.
So yeah A) Why the jacket (is it because its sort of his security blaket?)
B) How did you know people would pick up on that. Because i definately associate the jacket with him but it seems like its not enough to stand out to grab everyones attention

p.s. the scar on tug at first didnt work for me but by like the third viewing i really noticed it (in the second i thought i saw it so i went into the third looking for it). I think the subtelety of it is done well so that those who are going simply for the face value of the movie it won't rattle them but those looking at it deeper can see where it leads (to tugs hat. wonder whats under there)

yah so keep it real

The jacket was the one distinct piece of clothing Brendan had - Joe and I spent lots of time talking about what it should look like, and lots more time searching different types before we found that particular one. It's definitely a security thing for the character, a shell he wears. It's also something I did quite a lot in high school and college - found a jacket I liked and wore it everywhere, as a sort of uniform.

Finally got the high-res version of the construction-paper cover together. Careful, that's a 1.5mb download--5.25"x7.25" at 300dpi.

I can definitely see how the jacket embodies Brendan; it actually adds so much to him even though it's such a little thing. The way he digs his hands deep into the pockets gives him such a hard, outcast look...it's awesome. Although, the thing I noticed about Brendan before his jacket was the way his hair covered his eyes/glasses casting a shadow on the top half of his face also giving him that dark look. It's amazing.

Also, I just saw Brick for the second time and I didn't notice Tug's scar until he first brings Brendan into The Pin's house and it's that shot where he's covering Brendan's eyes in the basement. I first noticed it there. From then on I couldn't stop looking at it. It added a lot more to Tug's character as a whole.
