Hey everyone,

I'm totaly new to this forum and i'm a huge fan of Rian's work. At this moment i'm working on my college thesis and i'm writing about metaphorical storytelling in Breaking Bad. Therefor i'm writing about Rian's episodes "Fly", "Fifty-One" and "Ozymandias". Because for me his episodes have the best metaphors to write and talk about. Do you guys have any tips which ohter work of him has this amount of metaphors? Or do you think Rian uses a special kind of metaphors (narrative, visual, auditive) or does he use a special kind of metaphor in order to create his own style within the series?

I'm grateful about any kind of response and I apologize for my bad english, because I'm from Germany.

Thanks.

Watched "Fly" again last night and took a few notes.

fly = contaminant = randomness = cancer

just as Walt attempts to create the perfect environment to cook he attempts to create the optimum conditions for his family after his death

but just as the fly invades the cook room, the randomness of the universe keeps asserting itself into what he hopes to be his legacy

I'd have to watch the series again, but this episode may be a pivotal one in that here Walt's motives shift from providing for his family after his death to keeping his family from disintegrating

Episode's key phrase:
Walt (paraphrase): Let it go. It's all contaminated.

I doubt there's anything here you haven't thought of already, but there you go.

elwray_123 has not returned.
Duane, I think you handed him his thesis.
Insist on co-authorship.

Sorry guys...had a busy week...thanks for your help, i'm very grateful! I have to watch Fly again this weekend and try to look at your thoughts. The difficult part for me so far is to find a source like "rian johnson is a filmmaker, who has a very metaphorical style"...does anbody know a book or an article or something like that with a sentence like that? :)

@Neil
I'm studying in Germany and the university is called "Universit├Ąt Siegen". I'm still writing the introduction about "film metaphors" and therefore I'm writing a lot about the russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein and the french filmcritic Christian Metz. I guess in the next few days I have to take a closer look at Breaking Bad and Rian Johnson's work.
