What's "controversial" about a 78 cadillac?

Thank you! When I watched this at home with a bunch of friends, everyone laughed at this line! I didn't want to say it had been plaguing me every time I saw it >_<

Nothing is controversal about a 78 cadillac, but an 80 to 85 cadillac like the one featured in the film, was quite controversal because of the styling of the ass end. The cars year was mislabeled in the dialogue.

Don't know if this helps...

AMM: One of the best lines in [The Brothers Bloom] is: "Did you rent a '78 Caddy? Controversial choice." How'd that come about?

RJ: I have no idea. I think I had some friend who used to use that phrase a lot. You'd put on a CD and he'd go, "Ah, Steely Dan, controversial choice." Also that realm of Cadillac is a car I owned back in my early 20s, so maybe that's it.

That makes me so happy. I thought it was some historical or pop culture reference I was missing out on, but no! Pure non sequitur.

I also like that apparently there's something controversial about the actual car they used, even though they couldn't get a '78 (Considering they were in Romania, that's not unreasonable).

Apparently, 1978 was also the year "Iran Cadillac" was the brand name, due to the model being manufactured in Iran... According to Wikipedia.

I was pretty shocked when our vehicle guy found that thing in the middle of Romania...

Weird things are out there. I once saw a '64 (ish) Ford Galaxie 500 in a small town in New Zealand.

Well, if SmartCars can be found in the US...

(however, Cadillacs are infinitely cooler than SmartCars)

You can put a long horn on the hood of this car! LOL 100% classic hope there are cars like this still rolling on the road way too old to drive and for sure this one is a gas guzzling beast :)
