I got the impression from my first viewing of the picture that there was an implied lesbian or at least bi-curious relationship or vibe between Penelope and Bang-Bang. It doesn't seem to be more than a throwaway gag, but I wondered if it had more of a presence in the original cut?
I also wondered if I'm just reading way too much into two or three lines and/or glances.
In addition to that, I'm trying to work out the significance of naming the pedo-Faginish Maximilian Schell character after a Bowie tune, if there is any.

I would never confirm nor deny anything so fun.

The Diamond Dog's name was taken from a Joni Mitchel song actually - Bloom quotes it when the Dog first shows up at the bar.

Apparently gin is not the only thing "fruity".

My brain went Bowie at first too, Jeremy. But then Bloom says, "Diamond Dog, carrying a cup and a cane," which I knew sounded vaguely familiar. It's from Joni Mitchell's "The Hissing of Summer Lawns."

A diamond dog
Carrying a cup and a cane
Looking through a double glass
Looking at too much pride and too much shame
There's a black fly buzzing
There's a heat wave burning in her master's voice
Hissing summer lawns

As for your theory about Bang Bang and Penelope, I must say I didn't see it. I actually thought it was more that Penelope's childlike innocence brought out something perhaps hidden or forgotten in the more reserved and violent Bang Bang. I liked the friendship they developed, but I saw nothing romantic or sexual about it.

Still, it's always cool to hear new theories! Welcome to the forum :)

Damn, I can't believe I missed that. I wonder if I have to hand in my Joni Mitchell Fan Card now! Hopefully this is one of those references you're not meant to pick up on until the second viewing.

I didn't see it at the time, but now I can't get it out of my head.

The evidence is mounting up! It's at least conclusive enough for Glenn Beck to tearfully denounce TBB on tv.
