So, I'm confused and now I want to know. What did Mark Cuban do?

Google him. You'll find a ton about some insider trading: seems he sold some stock upon learning it was about to go down in value. Shocking, I know. Me, as I tend to think of Cuban as a relative good guy, I assume he was doing pretty much what they all do, and was singled out by the SEC for some in-group/out-group reason.

Glad we straightened out about Cuban's Landmark, which is the biggest "art" film theater chain in the US and might be partners with Redford and/or Sundance, vs that other Landmark thing in Chi. I couldn't imagine

It's not going to be the arclight. Because it's just a 1 week qualifying run it'll be in a smaller theater, I'm not sure which yet but I'll post it when I know...
Ah, good. I like the Arclight, my friend Derrick used to work there and was full of awkward celebrity stories. Fond memories of Patton Oswalt screaming at him to be allowed into King Kong for free, that sort of thing. And he used to work with Dwight Ewell from Chasing Amy, who may still Maitre'D there.

Wait, I have one. Me and my girlfriend went there earlier this year and saw The Fall; she had been grumbling that while in LA she hadn't seen anyone famous, that I'm the only one who gets to meet or see anyone cool. I get up to go to the bathroom, and notice the line out the women's is quite long, and Teri Hatcher is in line looking understandably bemused. After the movie, I mention I saw Teri Hatcher to my girlfriend, who gets all crabby that she didn't get to see anyone when SHE went to the restroom.

(Later this year she met Rian Johnson, and was pleased as punch that she FINALLY got to meet someone talented and terrific.)

Great, now there's going to be this HUGE debacle over Mark Cuban when some google bot goes and tells some reporter that some guy saw something about something about hating gay people. Way to go man, just way to go.

Mark Cuban mostly just annoys me. He's like a young Jerry Jones to me (I'm originally from the Dallas area).

There's also the fact that the union I belong to picketed The Landmark when it opened. And it's still non-union over there. Laemmle has union technicians at least.

My guess is Laemmle and that would fine but if it goes to The Landmark I won't be going. Mark Cuban isn't getting a dime from me. Glad I saw it at AFI Fest.

Jered raises an interesting moral dilemma. In San Francisco, once you’ve eliminated Landmark Theaters (sidebar: Mark Cuban also owns Magnolia Pictures, so watching films distributed by this company would also contribute to his income), AMC and Loew’s theaters (both companies owned by J.P. Morgan Partners, LLC), and Cinemark Theatres (CEO Alan Stock’s contribution to Proposition Eight), you’re left with Sundance Kabuki and a handful of independent theaters, or theaters owned by local chains, the screens of which are as likely to show Hollywood/high-budget films as not. (And I’m assuming a squeaky cleanness on the part of the owners of these theaters.)

In fact, I would make a conservative guess that roughly half the films (indies, many by first-time directors) shown at Landmark Theatres here in the City would not be shown at any of these other theaters. The economics are then clear: Fewer indie films shown results in fewer indie films being picked up by distributors. Fewer indie films picked up by distributors means fewer indie films receiving funding to be made. Fewer indie films being made means fewer opportunities for filmmakers, many of whom would be first-time directors.

I’m not by any means criticizing Jered. He makes some very good ethical points. I’m just pointing out the potential cost to filmmakers and film-goers down the line as to the effect of boycotting such a theater chain.

If it were the only option to see indie films then yeah, sure. But I've got Laemmle here to support the indie market, and I have no problems with the Laemmle family.

Kinda like if there's a Wal-Mart in your area and it's the only place within reasonable distance to get what you need....you're gonna go to Wal-Mart.

Huh? wait, I thought we disestablished the Mark Cuban as bad guy connection?

Same bad guy (or at least sleazy operator with a taste for indie and foreign films), different connection.

I don't know Mark Cuban from Adam, but what I do know is that the cool, old theaters in Seattle that play foreign and indie releases (like Brick) are all Landmark theaters. And if he didn't own and operate them, I wonder who would. Just saying.

Oh, except for the theater closest to my house. That's owned by one of the richest Jewish families in the state as sort of a pet project. I might be able to argue against giving them more money, but they donate a lot of it to local theater, so everybody wins!

Why does everyone think Angelina Jolie stole Brad? I am not Angelina Jolie's fan but I have to disagree with the fact that she stole Bard from Angelina Jolie. Let’s face it, there is no such thing as someone stealing your partner even though it might seem like .It takes two to tango.
