Well, yeah.

Summit is announcing today that they're pushing Bloom to limited on May 15th, wide on May 29th. January is crowded with an insane amount of Oscar movies (some being released, some expanding) and Summit decided that Bloom would play better as counter-programming to a few summer movies than to a few dozen oscar ones.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being bummed. I want you guys to see the movie, it feels a little like I've been movie-pregnant for 9 months and my movie-doctor has just told me he'd like me to wait another 6 months before movie-delivering. (Note to anyone who has or will at some point carry an actual real life baby: I only feel like this a little.)

But January is definitely crowded, and May may prove a better spot, so there's logic to Summit's move. So May it is. Sorry guys. Dissapointment aside, what do you think of the move?

Well, obviously the summer is a good time for movies, but January is always disappointing and devoid of stuff to go see. So long as they promote it, I don't see why it couldn't compete in the summer madness.

Of course, you could always throw a private screening party in your basement for your good friends at rcjohnso.com. No pressure.

Time for you to host a private fan screening in my livingroom.

Oddly enough, I think it's an overall positive. Just for the simple fact that more people are more willing to go to the theater in late May than mid-January.

Also, the chances of it playing at my theater just greatly increased.

My birthday is January 13.....

Mine's December 17th. (Though there are alot of birthdays happening that day, so I'm told by Summit they might push it back to May.)

so this means no "qualifying" run? No 2008 awards consideration?

If so, bummer...

I enjoy me some Defamer, and god knows I'm no expert on the voodoo of release date juggling. But logical or not, I can 100% promise that the move had absolutely nothing to do with Mark's recent tragedy.

I am happy for two reasons. One, if it's opening in May as counterprogramming, it should have a wider release.

Two, I've seen it already and it's brilliant.

What bothers me about the Defamer bit is that they chose not to include how you were bothered by the move, suggesting that you had some sort of authority behind the decision.
