Sorry, holding out for something in the LA area, much as I'd like to go to London...uh, pretty much anytime.

Ooooh, and I guess if it's going in print I should clarify that the 'OK' in my text message was meant to be a comic understatement - the screening went goddamn fantastic, great reactions and lots of love from the crowd. I was pretty blown away by how well it played.

As for the critics reactions, it's funny, we've gotten a few very visible high profile hateful reviews, but most of the stuff being written about it is very positive. But even the bad ones are encouraging to me, because they remind me very much of the bad reviews that Brick got on its unveiling. It's odd, everyone seems to be remembering Brick as a critic's darling that was instantly and universally loved, and it truly wasn't. The reviews were just as mixed as they are for Bloom, and for many of the same reasons - people are either being pulled in by the film's strong, dense style or are bouncing off of it.

I must say the Variety one depressed me because it was so absolutely joyless. Then I looked through the writer's back catalogue and a) couldn't find many major films he'd been let loose on and b) saw his In Bruges review, which was just as flat as his Bloom (eg, "McDonagh shows no imagination or fire behind the camera"). It was like a tax inspector at London Fashion Week, tutting about all the money being wasted and sighing, "Nobody'll wear it. Nobody'll wear it." A very pompous tax inspector...

Ok, so I'm not crazy - I've never seen that guy's name before. I remember The Fountain had a similar issue, Variety gave it to a junior critic (or "cub critic" as Devin at CHUD called him) who trashed it. Not that there weren't plenty of big bear critics who trashed it (and will trash ours) as well. Yatz!

Er, one day I'll tell you who that "cub critic" was.... I couldn't bring myself to tell Darren Aronofsky either when I had a few minutes with him at the end of a very long day in Venice, and he was thanking me for my kind words when clearly he hadn't heard too many.

well, watch this space....I have a couple of tickets for the Tuesday screening, which I may not need if I get confirmation that I'm going to the Gala evening screening. I'll know in a week or so.

I finish work at 4, and live 2 hours away by train, and Monday is all sold out, so Tuesday is the only day left, and that showing is at 4.

I don't think this is going to happen for me =(

Le sigh
